Historic Preservation Commission

Purpose: Historic Preservation in the City of St. Marys is guided by the Historic Preservation Commission which issues Certificates of Appropriateness for projects located within Historic St. Marys. It is the duty of the Historic Preservation Commission to preserve historic, cultural, and architecture value; enhance the downtown area's historic character; consider the appropriateness of any new alteration, addition, demolition, or exterior changes (including signs) visible from the public right-of-way; determining the proposed change's compatibility in design and materials to the National Register listed Historic District; and approving or denying Certificates of Appropriateness on a case-by-case basis.

Meetings: The Historic Preservation Commission meets the fourth Tuesday of each month at 5:30 PM. The meetings are open to the public and are held in the City Hall Council Chambers. It is anticipated that appointed members will attend a majority of regular scheduled meetings and if unable to attend, will notify the chair in advance of the meeting.

Interested in Serving?: If you are interested in serving, it is suggested you attend at least one meeting in order to have an understanding of the function of the board. Appointed members of all citizen boards are required to attend Open Records Open Meetings training provided by the City Clerk. In addition, Historic Preservation Commission Board members are required to be full-time residents of the City of ST. Marys for a continuous period in excess of one year. They are expected to have demonstrated special interest, experience, or education in history, architecture, or the preservation of historic resources.
